Scarlet Macaw; Curu
We spent the morning exploring a very unique ecosystem: the transition between the Tropical Rain Forest and the Tropical Dry Forest, here in the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. At Manuel Antonio National Park, we were able to see plants and animals of both ecosystems. After lunch we sailed north in order to get see Tropical Dry Forest.
Suddenly on one of our walks we were surprised by a flash of red: a group of scarlet macaws had perched on a branch just in front of us.
There are some 332 living species of Psittacidae (parrot family), and they are found almost everywhere in the tropics except in treeless deserts. Without question the prettiest of them all are the macaws. They are large, with long pointed tails and very brilliant colors.
We were all very excited to see this population flying wild.
