Fog met us this morning as we anchored in Kiska Harbor, where long ago in the fog, rain, and chilly marine environment of western Alaska at large occurred one of the largest “battles” fought in the Aleutians during World War II. It was a humbling experience to walk these grounds of the Kiska National Historic Landmark. How difficult it is to imagine what went through the minds of the 34,000 American troops that were transported to Kiska to reclaim the island from the Japanese, the conditions seemed fitting and allowed us to take in this remote island in its rich, impacting state.
