With a chill in the air and a promise of 61 degrees, we set off to explore Idaho. Our pathway paralleled the Corps of Discovery travels – both on their 1805 downstream voyage and 1806 upstream return to retrieve their horses left with the Nez Perce people. Our pathway detoured however with excursions to two of the some 60 wineries that call Idaho home. We ended our day with a presentation and tasting from Coco Umiker of Clearwater Canyon Cellars. It was a beautiful day to explore countryside, vineyards and the history of this magnificent valley.

Astoria and Cape Disappointment
Astoria is known for the Goonies, Short Circuit, and Free Willy, but we saw a different side of it by visiting the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Astoria Column, and Cape Disappointment. Our day started by exploring the highly regarded Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on Cape Disappointment, overlooking the confluence of the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean. We hiked down to Waikiki Beach, where in 1811 Hawaiian sailors washed up on shore trying to transit over the perilous Columbia River Bar. We also took in the Maya Lin Confluence Exhibit celebrating the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark’s expedition to the Pacific Ocean. Guests toured the highly regarded Maritime Museum, celebrating Astoria’s deep maritime history. We also visited the Astoria Column, towering 125-feet above Coxcomb Hill with majestic views of the mouth of the Columbia River, Oregon, and Washington coastlines. Guests returned to National Geographic Sea Bird for their final cocktail hour, recap, and dinner, followed by the world premiere of the guest slide show.
