Misty Fjords National Monument, 9/12/2022, National Geographic Sea Bird

  • Aboard the National Geographic Sea Bird
  • Alaska

We enjoyed an early morning sailing into Misty Fjords National Monument on National Geographic Sea Bird. We woke to incredible weather and beautiful, forested, and steep mountains. We stopped before our destination of Rudyerd Bay to lower our Zodiacs. We zoomed through the narrow channel called Owl’s Pass and watched as the ship sailed through the pass. The light was a photographer’s delight, and the blue skies and sunny day were enjoyed by all.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed exploring Rudyerd Bay by both Zodiac and kayak. Even on a warm, sunny day, a light haze hovered over the back bay, hinting at the location’s name…Misty Fjords. Taking advantage of the high tide, we were able to cruise up the salmon river quite a distance, discovering that some pink and chum salmon were still running, though they looked to be at the end of their spawning. We were delighted to see a few harbor seals actively fishing for salmon. A great day was had by all, and we enjoyed our recap and cocktail hour as we sailed out of Owl’s Pass and headed south to Canada.
