Payne’s Creek and Snake Cayes, 1/26/2022, National Geographic Sea Lion

  • Aboard the National Geographic Sea Lion
  • Belize & Guatemala

National Geographic Sea Lion is the perfect vessel for visiting and exploring places like Payne’s Creek National Park. This park is unique because of the many types of environments, including wetlands, a pine savanna and a broadleaf forest.

The Belize government managed Payne’s Creek National Park on and off for years. Locals formed an organization named TIDE to buffer the park from Monkey River, Punta Negra Village and the town of Punta Gorda. TIDE, the government and local communities are all currently involved with the park’s day-to-day management.

Payne’s Creek National Park hosts student groups and researchers studying snakes, manatees and yellow-headed parrots. The park also welcomes sport-fishing guides and anglers who hope to see tarpons, bonefish and permits at the end of their fishing lines. This area, well protected from the wind, is great for kayaking. Guests can also spot the manatees that call this vast lagoon system home.

After a wonderful and delicious lunch aboard National Geographic Sea Lion, guests relaxed before a safety briefing on snorkeling in Snake Caye.

The day was so nice, and guests had the opportunity to swim in clear, calm waters. Our day ended on the beach with ice-cold beers and sodas to cool down after some beautiful snorkeling.

Today was another great expedition for us!
