We woke up to a calmer-than-expected Drake Passage and are making good progress towards the White Continent. We were enjoying the seabirds that surrounded the ship in this wide, open ocean, including giant petrels and wandering albatrosses. In the morning our naturalist Bud gave us a presentation about the seabirds of the Southern Ocean which tied in nicely with what we were seeing from the sundeck at the stern of the ship!
In the afternoon we learned about expedition photography from our Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic certified photo instructor Steve Morello and our National Geographic photographer Michaela Skovranova. After this we learned about the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) guidelines for visiting Antarctica and our Zodiac operations. The final task of the day was to decontaminate our boots and outerwear so as to avoid introducing alien species to this pristine region of the world.
We are in eager anticipation of the adventures and experiences that await us!
