Today was a very special day – giant tortoise day! The island we visited today is home to one of the most successful breeding centers in the world, the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center on Santa Cruz Island. In the morning, we visited this breeding center and got to learn about the tortoise lifecycle and the different conservation efforts that the Charles Darwin Foundation and the National Park Headquarters are working on.
After the breeding center, we visited a local sugarcane farm, where we learned the different techniques they use to make sugar, coffee and alcohol. In the afternoon, we went to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island and explored the migration path of the Santa Cruz giant tortoises. This has been a truly magical day in the Enchanted Islands, shared with the most iconic image of the Galapagos, the giant tortoises!
