National Geographic Explorer is an ice-class vessel equipped with a reinforced hull and capable of going where other ships dare not. So, we ventured into the Weddell Sea, on the east side of the Antarctic Peninsula, where Sir Ernest Shackleton and the crew of Endurance , stuck in the deep pack ice in 1915, aborted their mission to be the first to cross the continent via the South Pole. Our officers navigated through the ice to find the iceberg named A68-A, which broke off of the Larsen C ice shelf in 2017.

While we cruised, we filled the day with presentations, and the young explorers on board participated in a stowaway drill. They were skilled at the game of hide-and-seek and successfully evaded the seeking crew.

We turned back north to rendezvous with more adventures on the scenic west side of the peninsula.
