Life Aboard

An incomparable mix of elegance & informality

Step aboard Sea Cloud and be transported to the intoxicating golden age of sailing aboard a vessel as elegant and lively today as when heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her tycoon husband E.F. Hutton launched her in the 1930’s. The Huttons created one of the largest, most opulent private sailing yachts ever built. It’s rumored that Marjorie Merriweather Post never asked the price of a single item while designing and outfitting the ship—and today the charm of their era radiates across time. There’s no need to dress up ever; while the ship’s dining room and lounge would be suitable for black-tie formality, you’ll find a lighthearted delight in enjoying it in more casual dress.

Dining in the old salon
Sea Cloud’s dining room is paneled in warm woods and hung with original oil paintings. It is on the promenade deck, in Sea Cloud’s former salon, where Marjorie Merriweather Post received her guests. The chefs come from renowned, first-class restaurants, and offer fresh, contemporary cuisine inflected with regional flavors. We use fresh ingredients sourced locally, from sustainable providers whenever possible. By adding local flavors to a menu that also includes traditional favorites, we aim to give you a greater sense of the cuisine and culture in the region we’re exploring. An array of fresh fruits and delicious, fresh juices are key components of the breakfast buffet. Wines from well-known regions are served with lunch and dinner, and are included in the expedition price. There are fish or meat choices at every meal, and our chef will happily accommodate special diet requests—please let us know about any requests in advance so that we may prepare.

There’s no assigned seating in the dining room; in fact, many tables accommodate uneven numbers. This makes for easy mingling and the fun of sharing breakfast, lunch, or dinner with different new friends, or staff. And independent travelers can count on a welcome everywhere they turn.

Sea Cloud’s open deck spaces
The joy of traveling aboard Sea Cloud is relaxing in her expansive, open spaces on the top deck, enjoying the ocean breeze and watching the crew at the busy task of sailing this legendary tall ship. The deck spaces are natural gathering places, perfect for lolling about in shorts, T-shirts, or bathing suits, and feeling Sea Cloud glide through the ocean under full sail. We invite you to freely roam the ship, discovering the nooks and crannies.

Lido deck: The open top deck areas are perfect for watching the orchestration of hand-raising and reefing Sea Cloud’s 30 sails. It is where the bar, a social hub of the ship overseen by the attentive barman, is located. And it’s where the expedition community gathers for lectures and presentations, weather permitting. Marjorie Merriweather Post nicknamed the cushioned semicircle at the stern of the ship the Blue Lagoon. It’s a perfect place to relax or recline, gazing up at the masts and sails, hearing the splash of the wake behind you.

Monkey deck: Perched above the bridge, the monkey deck looks into the web of rigging that stretches up to 180 feet overhead. It offers the sensation of going above and working riggings while surrounded by white sails. The foredeck set in front of the bridge provides a space to watch the foremast and bowsprit activity while under sail.

Bridge: You’re invited to the ship’s bridge to see the calm business of navigation unfold. Help yourself to the ever-ready binoculars to scan the horizon for marine mammals, or ask the watch officer questions about sailing. You’ll see five brass chevrons fixed at the front of the bridge—each stands for half-a-year of active military service during WWII. There will occasionally be times when the bridge must be restricted to shipboard personnel only, but otherwise, you are always welcome.

Swimming from Sea Cloud
Swimming from Sea Cloud is more than your average jump into the sea. Like everything aboard, it is a special event unto itself. Site selection is important, as the captain looks to anchor the ship where it will provide a calm, but sunny, lee with a spectacular view. Down go the safety lines, to which a dozen or so floating mattresses are strung as a boundary. The gangway is lowered into the water, and the hotel manager lifeguard calls out with exuberance, “The pool is open!”

Soon, the sea is filled with smiling, laughing bobble-heads, buoyed up by the clear ocean’s salinity. This makes it easy to have the best experience of all on a Sea Cloud swim: swimming on your back or lying on a floating mattress, and looking up in awe at the towering masts and rigging above. Fellow shipmates line the rails taking photos of the swimmers, who are looking far, far beyond up into the heavens, which seem to be tickled with the tops of Sea Cloud’s four masts. Feeling of floating in the sea with the rigging reaching into the heavens stays with us forever, and is yet another exclamation point in a day in the life of Sea Cloud.
