The first bird calls woke us up this morning at Belluda Caño. Our excursion began early with a pre-breakfast skiff ride along the riverside—the best way to start. The first surprise of the morning was given by a flock of red-bellied macaws perching on top of some dead trees. Further in the forest, blue and yellow macaws provided a wonderful photo opportunity. On our way back to Delfin II, we paused to admire giant water lily pads that perfectly decorated the river surface.
The next portion of the morning activities found us deep inside Belluda Caño. Secropia trees lining the riverside hosted different kinds of small birds, such as white-winged swallows, slate-colored hawks, plombius kites and chestnut-eared aracari. A colorful caiman lizard swimming close to the river edge was our last surprise of the morning.
In the afternoon, Dorado River offered us a magnificent display of wildlife. Snowy egrets decorated the bushes while nesting hoatzins were a special delight, as were baby caimans found in the floating vegetation. A dazzling sunset behind the rain forest was the perfect ending to our journey through the living paradise known as the Upper Amazon.
