Our walking tour of Cienfuegos began at the statue of Cuban musical hero Benny More.  We strolled down the main pedestrian street, and looked in at the pharmacy and the hardware store as locals did their errands. At the municipal market, vendors sold onions, greens tomatoes, root vegetables and grains, and butchers readied cuts of pork with enormous knives. The market was quite busy, but even so, vendors smiled as we walked through with our cameras and curiosity.

We went into historic Thomas Terry Theater to see its beautiful interior architecture. The design is unusual - it was built with a pool beneath the stage for improved acoustics, and seating which could be removed to accommodate large parties.  We had time to explore Ciefuegos on our own, too, and visited art galleries or went to the government shop to purchase fine cigars and Cuban rum.

Lunch was at Villa Lagarto, a lovely waterfront restaurant. As we drove to the end of the Punta Gorda peninsula, we passed some of the opulent villas that were built here in the early 1900s.  Later in the afternoon, we saw the traditional Cuban children’s musical ‘La Cucarachita Martina.’ The several dozen young performers in the Abracadabra Troupe treated us to a lively, fun, and truly memorable experience! We enjoyed farewell cocktails on the rooftop terrace of La Union Hotel, as the sun set over Cienfuegos.
