Our third day of expedition began on a greenish volcanic beach. The coast was busy with blue-footed boobies, as their nesting site is right along the shore. We observed them engaging in various activities from parents feeding babies, to mating pairs and fights. Our photography-specialized group got to spend a good amount of time with them, while the rest of us explored inland. We passed a brackish water lagoon where we found a huge group of flamingos feeding on brine shrimp, with their heads deep in the water.
On the other side of the island we reached a white sand beach important for turtle nesting. We were lucky to witness a turtle covering its nest in the middle of a sand dune and watched the whole process from start to finish! We then watched the turtle head back to the ocean – it was a very special moment. Later in the afternoon we visited Post Office Bay and contributed to our local tradition by taking one card to be delivered to its destination. Kayakers used the last hours of light and explored an entire mangrove area near the baroness lookout. It was a wonderful day filled with interesting wildlife.
