Dominica, the nature island of the Caribbean, was given its current name by Christopher Columbus who sighted it on a Sunday and was apparently running low on creativity—though to be fair since he was looking for Asia it probably wasn’t something he’d planned for. He never set foot on this particular lushly forested tropical paradise but it looks today very much like it would have all those years ago when he sailed past. Unspoiled by the destructive swathe of sugarcane which took a toll on many other islands, Dominica remains an emerald gem in the chain that is the Lesser Antilles.
