Floreana Island, named after Ecuador’s former president Juan Jose Flores, was the first island in this archipelago to be inhabited by humans. It not only has a rich human history but very interesting wildlife.
Early in the morning we explored the Baroness viewpoint area by Zodiac, where we observed sea lions, marine iguanas, large prickly pear cactus, cactus finches and sea turtles. Not a bad way to start our day.
Energized after a delicious breakfast served by our hotel department, we landed at Post Office Bay where we could not only take and leave postcards for hand delivery but enjoy the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean. Explorers-in-training had the opportunity to take Zodiac driving lessons.
The afternoon took us to Cormorant Point, where we walked along the brackish lagoon adjacent to the beach. Flamingos were the highlight of this visit, but that was not all. The sunset was so spectacular that we had to stay a bit longer to fully enjoy it.
