Bartholomew & James Island

To visit Bartholomew Island is like going to a geologist paradise. You can find nearly every feature regarding volcanic eruptions. In other words, it is an open book of geology.

Our visit started early in the morning with an energetic oriented walk before breakfast. We explored the island which is mostly a brown lava field with lots of volcanic craters nearly everywhere. It was a cool humid morning.

Once back on board and having enjoyed a delicious breakfast, we started our disembarkation, this time for the beach with a wet landing and a short walk exploring the other side of the island, a golden-sandy beach with lots of ghost crabs and sea birds, such as blue footed boobies, pelicans and fishing penguins. The highlights of the place were many, but I particularly enjoyed snorkeling with sea lions and the beautiful schools of colorful tropical fish till noon time.

Our second expedition was a real adventure starting with the wet landing on a wavy beach where our skilled dinghy drivers avoided every single wave to take us safely to shore. Then we continued with a long walk on James Island along the rocky shore doing bird watching and observing marine iguanas and sea lions all around. Overall, we had great weather and perfect conditions to end up an excellent day!
