Floreana and Isabela Islands
We began our excursion early in the morning visiting the post office barrel which is one of the oldest mailing systems in South America. It was set up in 1793 by an English captain James Colnett who came to investigate the possibilities of new whaling grounds. This was the only way of communication that whalers had with their families back home, and this tradition is still going on with our visitors now days.
Later on, our Captain, Juan Rueda, took us toward Champion Island which is one of my favorite snorkeling sites in Galápagos, due to the abundance of fish and some curious and playful juvenile sea lions.
During the afternoon, we had our first encounter with true giant reptiles, the Galápagos Giant Tortoises in which the National Park service has a protection program with tortoises in captivity. The idea is to restore some populations from Isabela Island that have been in danger of extinction.
After the visit, our guests had a chance to walk around in this small and picturesque fishing village, Puerto Villamil.
