The cliffs of Capo Caccia on the northwest cot of Sardinia are breath taking. They are home to Neptune's Grotto, which we visited by local boat in the first part of the morning. Capo Caccia also boasts the highest lighthouse in the Mediterranean - 580 ft above sea level. After the grotto visit there was time in the mid morning for another inpromptu swimming and kayaking session, below these spectacular cliffs.

During lunch the Caledonian Star relocated to our anchorage off the town of Alghero. Using the Zodiacs to convey all ashore, we went on to explore the hinterland of the northwestern coastal region. Tracing some of the islands' extensive history included a visit to the Nuraghe of Palmavera. This extremely interesting settlement dates back to 1100 B.C. The Nuraghe, the so-called palace, is surrounded by 50 circular "huts". Of extreme interest was the "Reunion Hut" where political debates and magical-religious cults were held. Different phases of social life and political organisation of the tribal community were learnt from this particular area.

Returning to Alghero in the late afternoon there was still enough time to stroll through the charming old town and to indulge in a little shopping for local handicrafts. Departing from Alghero we sat on deck to enjoy the sun setting on the cliffs of Capo Caccia.
