Garibaldi Glacier, Chile

In a first for expedition cruise vessels in these parts, guests from the Caledonian Startook to the calm waters of this remote fjord in kayaks. Almost half of our guests chose to paddle around the steep-sided Garibaldi valley and experience the tranquil splendour of this scenic waterway in southern Chile. Unlike the familiar fjords of southeast Alaska, these in Chile are completely uninhabited and seldom visited. Naturally, waterfalls were abundant and captured the eye, but so too did the freshly calved ice that choked the waters at the head of the fjord. Delicately maneuvering the kayaks through the icy water, we listened to the cracks and rumblings of the glacier in front of us before returning to the ship for a welcome hot beverage.
