Gomera, Canary Isles

This is the town of San Sebastian, capital of the Island of La Gomera. In the distance is the island of Tenerife and its prominent volcano, Tiede, which at 12,402 feet is the highest mountain in Spain.

Our day was spent traveling around the island of Gomera, which is characterized by incredibly steep topography that affords many spectacular views. Like all the Canaries, Gomera is of volcanic origin and the geology is both beautiful and in full view.

We carried our lunch in the buses and ate at a beautiful picnic area called Laguna Grande in the Parque Nationál Garajonay at the top of the island surrounded by pines and laurel trees. The picture at left was taken on our return down the steep road to San Sebastian.

San Sebastian was the last stop for Christopher Columbus before he set off for India. Here he re-rigged the Pinta from a fore and aft configuration to a square rig to better take advantage of the trade winds as he sailed west. We were able to see the well from which they drew water for the voyage. It was an excellent day in the very mild climate of the island and a fine time was had by all.
