Yanayacu & Pucate Rivers

Our adventure in the Amazon this week started with a deep exploration of the Yanayacu River. The previous night we navigated one of the most important tributaries of the Amazon River, the Marañon River. Early in the morning the Delfin II was tied in front of one of the many small creeks in the area, the Yanayacu River. Just at the entrance of this black water river we observed a fairly large building, the PV 1. This is the name given by the local to Pacaya-Samiria Reserve wardens’ watching station number 1. Our first outing was highly successful for we spotted not only one but four three-toed Sloths. We spotted many bird species as well like beautiful Chestnut eared Araçaris, which are small colorful toucans, Great white Egrets and many Yellow-winged parakeets.

In the afternoon we explored another black water tributary the Pucate River. We had a few rain showers that helped to refresh the afternoon. During the skiff ride we had some highlights: majestic Scarlet Macaws and a Long-billed Woodcreeper that was observed at a close range for a long time. After the ride we visited a local community that was founded in 1977. There are many “ribereños,” the local name given to the people that live along the riverbanks in the area. We shared a special time with the many kids of the town, for our guests brought school supplies that were equally and cheerfully distributed among the curious children.

We returned to the ship with unforgettable feelings and memories in our hearts and minds of our first full day of our expedition in the Peruvian Amazon.
