Nauta Caño & San Francisco Town

Today we woke up, after a well-deserved night of rest, with our spirits and energies fully replenished. With a cup of coffee or tea in our hands we enjoyed a beautiful concert of bird calls that invited us to go on an early skiff ride. At 6:30 am we went to explore “Nauta Caño” where we had a blast of a time for we spotted many spectacular bird species like Horned screamers, kingfishers, noisy parrots and trogons. We spotted a fairly large troop of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri scireus) as well. The latter are very active arboreal small monkeys that move quickly, constantly making a lot of noise while travelling in their way to search for insects, which is their main food.

After breakfast we gathered on the upper deck for talk on photography. My intention was to encourage our guests this week to learn to operate the various cameras they brought taking full advantage of all their cameras’ functions, buttons and dials.

After the talk, at around 11:00 we had an amusing activity: swimming in the famous waters of the Amazon River! Once aboard, we had a colorful cocktail waiting for us. It was especially prepared to celebrate this important occasion.

In the afternoon our ship was tied in the vicinity of San Francisco community. We had two options: a short hike on the few remnants of “Terra firme” that are left after a severe flooding season or a skiff ride. On both options we all had a great time for we experienced the rain forest in differnet ways.

After a short visit to the community where we observed with curiosity their handicrafts, we returned to the ship. We can hardly wait to see the new sightings and adventures that our expedition on the upper Amazon will bring to our lives tomorrow.
