At Sea

Today was a day spent at sea as we made our way around Brittany, which is the northwest portion of France. During the morning many people slept in or wrote postcards or enjoyed the beautiful weather on deck as the ship made its way south into the Bay of Biscayne. Midmorning, David Barnes gave an informative lecture on Napolean Bonaparte in preparation for our visit to Ill Dex tommorrow.

The afternoon started off with a bang as right after lunch the third officer spotted a huge pod of common dolphins feeding on large schools of fish. The captain maneauvered the ship around so we could watch their antics in the ships wake and on the bow as they rode the pressure wave in front of the ship so effortlessly. It was a wonderful and unexpected addition to our day at sea. Later in the afternoon Jason Kelley gave an illustrated lecture on plate tectonics and how the Iberian peninsula has moved over geologic time. Soon after that the ship approached the island of Belle-Ile, which is a summer vacation spot for the french. The afternoons’ activities continued with a winetasting in the dining room hosted by the Hotel Manager Patrik alongwith William Lopez-Forment and Guillaume Georges who talked about the botany and methods of winemaking. The rest of the afternoon was spent lounging around on deck and continuing to enjoy the great weather.
