At Sea
Light winds and calm seas as the Endeavour makes east toward the Falkland Islands. Albatross and petrels appear, follow us for a few moments and vanish again, a momentary intersection with their endless windborne wanderings.
This is the first day of a new expedition which will take us through the Falklands archipelago, on to the astounding wildlife and stirring history of South Georgia and then further south to the South Orkneys, South Shetlands and Antarctica herself. Names out of legend, places we have dreamed of, the end of the earth.
Excitement runs high as we renew old acquaintances and strike up new friendships, anticipating the adventures soon to come. The lecture series has begun today with presentations on the lives of the seabirds we are encountering, the wildlife of the Falklands and the history of settlement and conflict on those rugged islands, all whetting our keen appetites for tomorrow’s first landings.
All around the ship preparations are in full swing. Zodiac engines are tuned up and ready, dive gear and the underwater video rig are maintained and ready, cameras are loaded and ready. Tonight we will sleep easy and rest well, dreaming of penguins flying through the water alongside our ship. And tomorrow the fun really begins!
