At Sea

Endeavour continued her journey today into the Intertropical Convergence Zone in the northern hemisphere. We are rounding the great western bulge of Africa, and a look at the chart shows we are passing many of the troubled countries of West Africa including Ivory Coast, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Our distance off shore is less than 400 miles and the radio is filled with chatter of many nationalities in several languages.

Leaving the calm equatorial waters behind we are again experiencing some ship’s motion as we enter the zone of the Northeast Tradewinds. Life in the sea is also increasing with more sightings of birds, fish and a large number of Portuguese Man O’ War floating across the surface of the ocean. These floating colonies of jellyfish-like animals are very dangerous to swimmers, so it was pleasant to observe them from the safety of our passing ship.
