Cuverville Island, Antarctica

It’s all about The Ice. A visitor to the Antarctic cannot help but be moved by the robust beauty and delicate nature of the many forms of ice that litter the seas here. Modern tourists and 19th-century explorers, alike, have commented on the seemingly unending variety of frozen water that fences the Seventh Continent off from the rest of the world. The presence of ice has always made travel to Antarctica a challenge, but it is also a reward in itself for those who persevere and slip through its broken barricade. Certainly the ice enthralled us on this morning’s kayak excursion, where we were able to paddle silently up to view dozing leopard seals (pictured) or drift about among the comical bathing of hundreds of penguins.
