Whaler’s Bay, Deception Island

A day of great contrast was enjoyed as we made three landings at volcanic Deception Island. We started with the penguin-packed shores of Rancho Point (sometimes called Baily Head) on the wild, outer beaches of the island, and finished with hiking trips in the relative calm of the inner shores of this collapsed caldera. Pictured is the abandoned whaling station at Whaler’s Bay, scene of our afternoon outing where we had a chance to stroll among the rusting relics of a 20th-century whaling station. The remains of ruined boilers (pictured) may not fit everyone’s image of The Last Continent, but this site is the most visited place in all of Antarctica. Last season alone, almost 10,000 tourists walked through the remains of the station and gained some insight into Antarctica’s industrial past.
