Port Foster, Deception Island
Home for most of us here on board the Endeavour is in the northern hemisphere...and still in winter’s grasp. Therefore, many of us follow the birds south for warmer climates and a break from Jack Frost. Not just any destination will do, of course. We need a location that meets all of our special requirements. Perhaps, we grew up with too many nights spent watching Frankie and Annette at the local drive-in, but our choice vacation spot must have sand, surf, sunshine, and swimsuits. Where can you find all these qualities and more? Why, Antarctica, of course! That’s right, gather the family and pack your bags for some good, old fashioned beach blanket bingo on the black sandy shores of Deception Island. Then, you too can find yourself basking in the glorious Austral summer sun and relaxing with friends in naturalist-formed, surfside Jacuzzis. Like the happy family pictured above, you’ll then have access to a variety of exciting activities such as quick dashes to red parka-clad towel servers, brisk swims along the shoreline, and spirited Zodiac rides back to the ship’s sauna. Sure, these protected waters lie inside an active caldera that as recently as the 1970’s wiped out the historic whaling station (the old floating dock can still be seen lying in the background above) and the British base, but that just means you won’t have to deal with all those rowdy holiday crowds. The only competition you’ll have for the choicest spots are from the bevy of local wildlife, which includes Weddell seals, Antarctic fur seals, chinstrap penguins, gentoo penguins, pintado petrels, and Antarctic skuas. The local snowy sheathbills and kelp gulls also keep these beaches immaculate by fastidiously disposing of any brittle stars or krill that may have been unfortunate enough to have ventured a little too close by some of the underwater thermal vents. But wait! That’s not all! At our unique island paradise you will also be treated like the star you are with your very own adoring paparazzi. You must hurry, however, because like the Antarctic summer, this offer won’t last long!
