Shapinsay Island

While guests enjoyed Shapinsay Island today, I slipped beneath the waves to capture this common starfish (Asterias rubens) crawling across the sea bed in search of a bivalve meal. This species is characterized by usually possessing five rays and can be found in colors of pale brown, orange or purple. In addition, the arms and the central disk are covered by spines that are encircled by pedicellariae. This sea star is common to the waters surrounding England, Ireland and Scotland, as well as Norway.
