Trollfjord, Norway
Spectacular scenery takes many forms. Yesterday we explored the broad, long, twisting fjords of Tysfjord, enclosed by gneiss cliffs and mountains exploding thousands of feet into the azure sky. Glacially carved horns, abounded. Jagged ridges were absent, due to the erosive action of the massive ice cap that covered the area through which we traveled.
This morning, in glorious sunlight, we entered straight, narrow, intimate Trollfjord. Barely wide enough for Endeavour, we cruised the jellyfish rich waters before breakfast, enjoying the scenery near and far, including the distant angular arretes that reached into the blue and white above. Captain Säterskog deftly maneuvered our craft to within a few feet of the cliff face, providing us with an intimate interaction with the ice scoured walls.
The weather evolved through the day, finally giving us a taste of true northern Norweigan conditions. But the intermittant squalls didn’t damper our enjoyment of the scenic Lofoten Islands. Landing by Zodiac in the strikingly located cod fishing community of Reine, there was time for a stroll and a visit to the local store off for Å. This nearby town features two surprisingly excellent museums, one on local history and one on, what else, COD!
