Halvmaneoya Island
While guests enjoyed the sights and sounds of Halvmaneoya Island which lies to the south of Edgeoya, I took a dive beneath a large ice flow hoping to capture images - to be later viewed by our guests - of a world that would otherwise be unexplored. While being mesmerized by the sheer beauty of the reflections of the ice against the sky a beautiful shimmering creature floated past. Being planktonic this Sea gooseberry (Pleurobrachia pileus) caught my attention with its two feathery tentacles, which can be retracted after catching prey. As it was drifting with the current the eight rows of swimming combs became apparent as they turned the available light into a prism of color. Pleurobrachia pileus has a wide distribution and extends from the Baltic Sea to the Atlantic, North Sea, and Channel coasts, the waters of northern Europe, and into the Mediterranean.
