Bartolome and James Islands
We are in the central part of the enchanted Archipelago which means these are middle age stages of perfect shield volcanoes.
This morning we had a nice hike to the top of Batolome. This island is completely made of layers of volcanic ash with a few lava flows here and there. It is a very dry, arid environment. However, this is a great place for pioneer species of plants such as Grey matplant and lava cactus that have changed to survive on this island. And of course the price to the early risers was the fantastic view that you get from the top. It is the most representative volcanic landscape of the islands. Later in the morning found us on beautiful golden sand for water activities. It was spectacular to see a great variety of tropical fishes and good visibility.
In the afternoon, we went ashore to explore the shore lines of James Island which is teeming with wild life. We encountered our friends the sea lions, the marine iguanas which were sun bathing, and the oystercatcher nesting. We also saw some fur seals. By then, it was time to heat back to the ship dreaming of more things to come.
