Isabela Island
Our expedition brought us today to Isabela Island, the largest one on the enchanted Galápagos Archipelago. This island, with over 1700 square miles covers more than half the land surface area of the whole archipelago. The characteristic elongated shape of this island resembles vaguely a sea horse's silhouette. Six impressive shield volcanoes are found on the island; they are (coming from the south to the north) Cerro Azul, Sierra Negra, Alcedo, Darwin, Wolf and Ecuador.
Among the many diverse activities that were offered today to our guests, one in particular was quite neat, climbing the near by Sierra Negra volcano. After approximately forty minutes ride on the local pickup trucks, we arrived to the base of the volcano. From this point we hiked, depending on the option, three to seven miles, until we finally reached the rim of the caldera of the volcano. The spectacular view of this enormous caldera, which is five by six miles across, was breathtaking. The scenery of the green lush on the misty highlands presents a dramatic contrast with the recent black lava flows. Sierra Negra volcano erupted very recently, last October to be precise. We can still observe some fumaroles in the distance smoking along the immense caldera floor. While we were coming back from the hike we felt invigorated and inspired. We just climbed today to a recently erupted volcano in one of the most famous nature travel destinations in the whole world, the Galápagos. Without any doubt, an experience of a lifetime!
