Santa Cruz & North Seymour Islands
We looked reluctantly to the highlands of Santa Cruz because of the huge clouds that were covering the top of the volcano. However, once there, we realized that instead of worrying for a potential rain shower, we were having the benefit of a refreshing morning. The hike to “El Chato Lagoon,” the place where giant tortoises gather in order to mate, was rewarding. We found mating tortoises, even though it's out of season according to the books. Certainly these reptiles don’t go along with the books. Breakfast was the most desired moment after such excitement, and we were not disappointed.
In the afternoon, we experienced some rough ocean conditions, but after a couple of hours, we were back to tranquility. The visit at North Seymour was simply outstanding. We were surrounded by courting frigates, both Great and Magnificent. Also the blue footed boobies continue with their reproduction, and in spite of the not-so- immense numbers of them, they are doing better this year than the three previous ones.
At the end of the afternoon, we were shocked by the colors displayed at sun set time. Everything got the pinkish tint on the island, but the coral rocks that are scattered along the trail made us go into a total relaxation of our souls.
