Espanola Island
What a great day we spent on this wonderful island. Diverse water activities were offered to all. Some, like snorkeling and kayaking, were enjoyed by most. The true highlight of the morning was Gardner beach. This paradisiacal place is often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Galápagos Islands, and it is! The exquisite beach’s fine white sand is as soft as powder. Spectacular aquamarine blue waters form a kind of frame to the long white beach. Anyway, the beach’s major attraction is a pretty large sea lion colony that makes this place as close to a dream as you can imagine. Sea lions were admired, praised, and photographed since the first moment we set foot on the island until we reluctantly leave it.
The afternoon was fantastic as well. The walk on Punta Suarez, located on the north western part of the island brought new sightings to our expedition. Some animal species that are found on Espanola Island are not only endemic to the Galápagos archipelago but the island. Marine iguanas, mockingbirds and lava lizards are so different from the ones found on other islands that they constitute full separate species. These animals are appropriately named Espanola in honor of the place they evolved and carry out their lives. Nazca boobies’ colonies, red billed tropicbirds and the majestic waved albatross were delightful sightings enjoyed by all. The sincere joy and the profound appreciation for the natural world that we can observe in our visitors’ eyes is the best evidence that they have had a great time on this extraordinary place on Earth.
