Floreana Island

Our visit to the Galápagos Islands has taken a sudden turn. There are a lot of animals on every island and plenty to talk about natural selection and the theory of evolution, but today, besides all of the above, we have a rich human history with a little addition of local folklore that has put a different taste in today’s visit.

Early in the morning, we headed to the famous post office bay. Here, a barrel was erected long ago (more than two centuries) and has been part of the lives of everyone who has come to the Galápagos since those times. The ancient tradition of communicating to your families using the “post office barrel” has changed into a much more “tourist” oriented activity. Past and present guests had landed on the island to pay a tribute to this tradition by leaving behind postcards inside of the barrel, that some day, somebody would pick them up willing to “hand deliver” them to their destination.

It was later when we got to know that there were more people visiting the islands since the earliest nineteen hundreds, and that as a result of their isolation, weird things happened on the island and to the people that inhabited it. There has been so many books describing the mysteries of the island, but there is nothing like the feeling of setting foot in an enchanted place like Floreana.
