Floreana Island

Today we awoke as we dropped anchor off the beautiful Floreana, the romantic island, the island of the mountains, to mention just a few of the many different names that people call this island that is both fantastic and unique among all the others of the archipelago.

It is no wonder that all the early visitors to the islands, pirates, buccaneers, privateers, whalers and fur-sealers chose this as their base! Unfortunately, their infatuation with this island due to the availability of fresh water and food led to the extinction of the Floreana species of giant tortoise. Rich in human history, the island could tell many a story and keeps well hidden secrets of strange early settlers that disappeared long ago.

We had a long overnight sail from the western realm of the Galapagos, all the way to the southern islands where we were to spend our last couple of days. We awoke early to visit a historical place well known as Post Office Bay due to the ancient postal system set up by whalers in the late 1700s, where some of our guests picked up postcards to hand deliver and left cards of their own in the centuries-old tradition. Late morning was the highlight of the day, however, as we donned masks and snorkels and immersed ourselves in the warm and clear waters of one of the very best snorkelling sites in the Galapagos. Among curious and playful sealions and countless brightly coloured schools of tropical fish, we lost ourselves in another completely alien world for a couple of hours that will remain with us forever. This wonderful day ended with a nature walk and the chance to kayak along a picturesque coastline.
