Española Island
Today was a late wake up day (thankfully!) and we started out with deep-water snorkeling in the bluest water we have seen so far. There were tons of colourful fish, eels, an octopus (which was a highlight), and two Marble Sting Rays. The rays were absolutely beautiful to watch swim - so graceful and smooth. Luckily they were swimming far below us so it was not too scary. We snorkeled for about an hour and then headed into a beach that was literally COVERED with sea lions! We were able to walk directly up to the babies and the mommies to take photos and swim with them in the ocean.
In the afternoon we had a very sad departure briefing. Nobody wants to leave! After the briefing, we left for our last afternoon walk. The walk followed the cliff along the southern part of the island, and then cut back through the inner section of the island. It was nice to end our trip with two diverse landscapes on one outing. We were able to see more blue-footed boobies, baby boobies and sea lions. I think we have taken about 1 million collective photos of baby sea lions! But the real stars of the afternoon were the “Christmas Marine Iguanas!” Their colouration was a nice contrast to the other iguanas we have seen so far. These animals were bright red and green – almost turquoise – in contrast to grays of the others we have seen so far.
A great place to end a great trip.
