Isabela & Fernandina Island

There was a common statement among everyone today, “This is the way I’d like to be awoken every day!” Our guests were absolutely right, because this morning we had an amazing display of wildlife since the sun started to shine. At six thirty, we already had a large pod of at least three to four hundred common dolphins fishing in the area. Some of them were jumping and pirouetting very high, as if they wanted to give the performance of their lives. Such event is a privilege given by our present location, the western most realm of the Galápagos archipelago.

In the same area, we can encounter easily a good number of sea birds species unique to the islands, such as the Galápagos shearwater and the dark rump petrel. Our sightings weren’t only sea birds, but anything that you can imagine in the water: sea turtles, rays, sharks, sea lions and even the spout of a tropical whale.

After a delicious breakfast, we were advised that old king Neptune was visiting the ship and he had requested the sacrifice of anybody who had not crossed the equator yet. As expected, our young guests were the sacrificial lambs, as King Neptune baptized them officially and sprayed his holy water on them!

After the ceremony we dropped anchor at Punta Vicente Roca; our Zodiacs were launched and all went for a spectacular panga ride full of animals and diverse scenery. We encountered the famous Galápagos penguins, flightless cormorants, sea lion feasting on fish and even more tropical whales! If the whales were not enough, one of our naturalists, Daniel Sanchez, jumped in the water and obtained incredible footage of the awkward-looking fish known as Mola mola.

It has been for sure another full day in this beautiful part of the world.
