Floreana Island
What a fantastic day we just had! Early in the morning, our way to Champion Island was already full of events; to begin with, a very large pod of short-beaked Common Dolphins showed up and delighted us all with their acrobatic jumps. This specie typically ranges through tropical and warm temperate regions of the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. It was great to see them close enough for everyone to take a great good look of their characteristic “hour-glass” shaped mark on their bellies.
Later on, we continued to Champion Islet and we just had to have one good look at the water to know that the snorkeling would be at its best! The sun was bright and the water was as calm as it can get. The visibility in the water was better than anything we could ask for, so we had the chance to observe many different species, even the ones that were swimming pretty deep. Tropical fishes such as King Angel, surgeons, Moorish idol, Burrito grunts, sharks…you name it! Everything seemed to be concentrated in one single area!
But even the most colourful fish would not dare to compare with the gracefulness of the sea lions while underwater; this would be probably the memory that would stick with our guests for a long time. We encountered a group of juvenile sea lions willing to perform acrobatic jumps and body twists for us; they are big time teasers, and there were times when all of them disappeared way down and all of a sudden came right up in front of us.
For the afternoon some of our guests decided to go kayaking, while some others headed to the beach looking for some quiet time. Later in the afternoon we ended up by a brackish water lagoon full of waders; flamingos, ducks and stilts were the most photogenic of all, and the light felt upon them very nicely, giving us simply perfect pictures in every click!
