Isabela and Fernandina Islands
We are all very much excited to visit the youngest and richest part of this Archipelago; it took all night long to get here, but it was worth it just to have the opportunity to explore this pristine area of the Galápagos. Even with today’s dense fog, we navigated along side Ecuador volcano; a perfect cross-section of a huge shield volcano, built up from the Galápagos submarine platform. The mist that surrounded us for the most part of the morning is probably the cause why early explorers used to call this archipelago “The Enchanted Islands.”
After crossing the Equator line, we decided to get our Zodiacs ready for a closer exploration of the beautiful cliffs at Punta Vicente Roca. The area was teeming with life, as we encountered penguins, marine iguanas, sea turtles and the very highlight for many of us, the Giant Ocean Sun fish or Mola mola.
Fortunately for me, I was carrying the underwater camera and jumped in the water at the first sight of this fish. It was very exciting to get a close look at the bizarre looking fish in his natural habitat.
