Española Island
The sand shined under the morning sun and the sea lions were – as usual – laying totally restful. The ocean showed an incredible calmness; its transparency made it possible for us to see many fish from the ship and it was a delight!
One group of adventurers took the route for the last snorkeling session while others chose the kayaking alternative. Both options were very gratifying and fulfilled everybody’s expectations, but it must be add that along the shoreline, during the kayaking experience, the paddlers were always escorted by Hood mockingbirds, brown noddies, pelicans, boobies and iguanas. It seemed like if they wanted to participate of the experience! Now, it would be difficult to know if they enjoyed our presence, but certainly we did enjoy theirs!
In the afternoon we were shocked by the amount of sea lions at the dock. Upon landing, we saw no less than 20 young sea lions surfing frenetically on the waves near the jetty. They really enjoy the surf just as much as we enjoyed watching them surfing!
Once on the jetty, we found out that it was taken over by a family of oystercatchers; we had to tip toe our way into the island to be able to continue with our visit. Many sea lions, marine iguanas, boobies and tropic birds in no fewer amounts were there, as well.
The albatrosses were in their apogee and many of them were courting and we even saw some of them with eggs. Blue-footed boobies are doing well, too; life keeps on going in this small island, and even though we know all the islands and their inhabitants so well, we all think that every day is full of new surprises...
