Isabela & Fernandina Islands

The phrase “what a wonderful day” is somehow repetitive, however I have no choice but to use it, since that is exactly what we just had, a wonderful day!

Our amazing experience started early in the morning, while spending some time along the northern shore of Isabela Island. There were a big group of eager guests looking for whales, and our efforts payed off since whales we got! A pod of no less than fifty short finned pilot whales appeared at the horizon; little by little they approached to the Islander so close that we were even able to see every detail of their bodies.

We didn’t have to wait too much to have similar encounters with the famous pacific sun fishes. These immense fish, both gentle and strange, allowed us to stay very close as it was swimming along side our Zodiacs.

During the snorkeling option, we enjoyed the company of penguins, flightless cormorants, sea turtles, furred seals and of course the sun fish. It was just awesome!

During the afternoon, while visiting Punta Espinosa, we witnessed an incredible feeding frenzy of blue-footed boobies. There must have been at least a thousand of them (if not more) rushing into the water to prey on an unlucky school of fish; just looking at them, it created a rush of adrenaline even on us!

Once on land, we were regaled by the presence of baby marine iguanas, some of which were way too curious, exposing themselves too much to possible predators such as hawks. Many turtles swam by the lagoons at the nearby areas, while flightless cormorants were very busy taking care of their nesting grounds.

Our minds have so many memories from this special place, and we are only in the middle of our expedition. Our guests are happy and probably wondering, what’s next? But for that my friends, you will have to wait until tomorrow!
