Floreana Island
Early in the morning we visited the famous post office bay and learned about the rich human history of this island. We picked up some of the postcards left in the barrel by previous visitors with the promise to deliver them hand to hand and participate in this way of a very old whaling tradition.
Later in the morning we snorkeled at Champion Island located on the off shores of Floreana. This is a spectacular place for snorkeling and scuba diving. Today the water conditions were perfect; we jumped in the water and as soon as we entered we were surrounded by thousands of colorful fish. The true stars of the day were the Galápagos sea lions; this morning there were so many small baby sea lions swimming and playing among themselves, but also interacting with the swimmers. This is a lifetime experience our guests will never forget.
During the afternoon we offered a variety of activities. Kayaking along the shore line of Punta cormorant was very interesting and a great opportunity to enjoy the beauty of this place. Swimming and snorkeling off a green inorganic beach was also a favorite. Later in the afternoon we walked on a cindery trail and saw many interesting plants common to the arid areas of the Galápagos. The highlight of this walk was the Greater flamingos. These beautiful birds live in salt water lagoons where they find their food (mainly water boatmen). Today we observed in the lagoon located in this area many adult flamingos and a few juveniles and we were all amazed with the bright, pink color they displayed. During our way back to the ship we all experienced a spectacular sunset and finished the day with great memories.
