Isabela and Fernandina Island

We started the day on the western side of the archipelago searching for whales. Two Bryde’s whales showed up for a few minutes, and then we saw a large group of common dolphins. Adult and baby dolphins were leaping, Galápagos shearwaters and dark-rumoed petrels were fishing, and a red-footed boobie was flying far from his home. What a nice way to start a new day!

Around ten we arrived at Punta Vicente Roca and on the Zodiac cruise we observed cormorants, penguins, blue-footed boobies, and noddy terns. The next activity was snorkeling with many sea lions and sea turtles. The guests and I were so excited that we forgot about the cold water, which is typical of the western side of the archipelago during this time of the year. The morning ended with a beautiful and delicious typical Ecuadorian lunch.

We spent the afternoon on the enchanted island of Fernandina surrounded by still active and majestic volcanoes. We enjoyed the beautiful landscape and all the wildlife found on this island. There were hundreds of huge marine iguanas warming up their bodies before the coming night; sea lions here and there were sleeping or playing, and we were moved by the peaceful interaction with the nature. The feeling of privilege that we felt to be walking on one of the most active volcanic places on earth, was intense. At the end of the day, I saw happy faces and heard laughter around me; everybody was satisfied. I was happy too!
