Bartolome & James Bay

What a day! We started very early in the morning, but that didn’t matter much since we visited an island that has perhaps one of the most spectacular landscapes of the whole Galápagos. The path was on a terrain that gave us the impression of being on a different planet, or even better than that, it transported us back into the past to a primitive earth, where anything could happen! After climbing over three hundred steps, we encountered a view that was simply breathtaking! This was only the beginning of our day, since right after breakfast we had an appointment with the marine world of the Galápagos, where many surprises awaited us. Minutes after we jumped into the water, the famous Galápagos penguin was spotted by some of our guests. Then green sea turtles and hundreds of colorful tropical fish were all around the rocky reef around the pinnacle rock formation.

The second part of the day was spent at James Island. We landed on a beautiful black sandy beach full of sea lions and shorebirds. We took a walk along the coastline, delighting our eyes with the rich and extraordinary wild life ecosystem of the area. More and more sea lions were spotted as we continued our walk, and as we explored the intertidal zone, the colorful and fearless Sally light foot crabs appeared as well. Lots of marine iguanas were found sunbathing on the black basaltic formations. It is funny how the fearsome look of these reptiles made us keep our distance in the beginning, just to find out moments later that they are just as harmless as a pussy cat! After such a nice walk, some of us decided to do some snorkeling on the nearby beach. It was great to encounter one of the most terrifying creatures on earth, the sharks, being just as friendly as any other animal in the Galápagos.
