Isabela Island
Just another great Day!
We could describe this island as a true paradise since it has a variety of natural areas for entertainment. The sandy beaches are gorgeous and the wetlands have developed a unique environment for several species of shorebirds, including the greater flamingo. For all of us who are into landscaping, the highlands have wonderful ones. The relatively new volcanic formations and the still smocking fumaroles attract many visitors to this particular area. Today, some of us were engaged into the mission of climbing a Volcano to appreciate these unique formations. As we were appreciating the beauty of the fumaroles, we couldn’t help to realize that, we were observing the signs that these islands are still in the process of formation.
Our walk up in the highlands revealed an incredible landscape, covered with lava fields and patches of green vegetation and cacti, struggling to survive literally in the middle of nowhere!
As we were hiking back to meet the rest of the party down in town, we encountered several species of land birds such as the beautiful vermillion flycatcher.Once down in town, we made a brief stop at the giant tortoise breeding center of Isabela. The programs for conservation in Isabela started more than ten years ago, and the community has learned so much out of it that nowadays, they are the most important reason of the success. People in Isabela are actively involved in the conservation projects, and the kids in town are part of many different “clubs” that develop conservation strategies for the benefit of the islands. Even after climbing a volcano, there is always time to get to know the people at the small village of Puerto Villamil. Some of us explored the long beach that skirts the town while others took off with the Lindblad mountain bikes to burn that last bit of energy on them. At the end of the day, we all had what we wanted…doesn’t it sound like a great day to you?
