Española Island
If you had ever wished to be in a bird’s paradise, then this is it!
Indeed this island is a treasure in the Galápagos, The beautiful white sand beach with its sea lions gave us the morning welcome. This beach is something spectacular; as you walk along you find so many sea lions resting after foraging in these rich waters where we snorkeled surrounded by large schools of fish of different kinds and the ever present white-tipped reef sharks resting on the sandy bottom. The rocky spots are so immensely rich in marine life that, even after having snorkeled for an entire week and thinking that we have seen everything, this was not the case. We found an octopus coming out of the rocks and a school of eagle rays passing through a undisturbed school of Creole fish, while at the time, a blue-footed booby dove down seizing one of them as it left behind a trail of bubbles in the water column. This showed us that this is a very unpredictable world and one never knows what is going to happen in a given moment.
Late afternoon, while still commenting about the morning’s adventures such as the beach and snorkeling, we got started on a walk through the bird’s world. The experience of seeing a flock of Nazca or blue-footed boobies completely fearless and being trailed by curious mocking birds was a breathtaking one. The birds on these islands seem not to have learned to fear man and instead of flying away, they approach or look at you seemingly as curious as you are of them. Here you can find a bird nesting or resting in the middle of the trail and at the reach of your hand…where else could we see these wonders coming together?
