Española Island
The morning was somewhat dull and overcast while we enjoyed a great breakfast in the dining room of the Islander, when some crew members announced the presence of whales. Immediately we moved on to find a humpback with a calf. It is quite possible this whale was the very same that was seen a couple of weeks ago on the western archipelago, for not very many come to the islands. But the big deal was her baby. Considering the size of the calf, it seems to have been born here in the islands. Every year the humpbacks come to Isla de La Plata, off the coast of Ecuador to give birth. However, there are not records of these whales delivering their babies on the archipelago. If this is true and that baby was born here, then we are talking of the first Galápagueño humpback ever recorded.
The bad thing is that the whale was very protective and we couldn’t capture the baby with our cameras; however, pictured is the proud mother. Enjoy!
