Santiago Island

Today this paradisiacal island was at its best. Weather conditions were ideal; it was sunny, and a refreshing cool breeze was our company during the whole outing. Different animal species were spotted along the coastline: Galápagos sea lions, Galápagos fur seals, marine iguanas, pelicans, noddy terns, and some shore birds as well.

The stars of the day were undoubtedly the always playful and inquisitive sea lions. In addition to their natural charm, we have already some of the female Galápagos sea lions giving birth. To get to see the little babies along the coastline was both very special and touching. As we were strolling along the coast, we observed lots of those babies already. Some of them were just a few days old and most of them were either nursing or sleeping peacefully on the beach. Some times you encounter sea lions, like the one pictured today, being already juveniles, and they are still being fed by their mothers! The milk is very thick and rich in fat components, although not very abundant. It was certainly amusing to observe the babies and juveniles going from one nipple to the other trying to obtain the most milk from their solicit mothers.
