Isabela Island

There are many places to visit in the Galápagos, and most of them are simply spectacular. This is the case of the two visitor sites where we ended up today, Isabela and Fernandina Islands.

Our morning was spent looking for marine mammal’s activity in the surroundings of northern Isabela. Our search was successful because just before going for breakfast we called for a whale. It had a spout not too tall but not too short either, which confused the naturalist for a moment. It ended up being one of the tropical whales known as Bryde’s. Known by its erratic behavior, the whale continued to appear and disappear without any apparent pattern. After trying to get a good hold on the whale, we decided to call off the search and reassumed our navigation towards the equator line. Right after breakfast we officially crossed the equator for a second time during our voyage.

The rest of our morning was dedicated to learn about the geology of the islands, and on the hands of our skilled captain, we routed the ship closer to the coastline of Ecuador volcano. Our naturalist on board explained it all, and all of a sudden it all made sense! Ecuador volcano has a rather irregular shape, and the reason is because half of its western side had collapsed, revealing its imposing inner flank. Its southern side is also quite steep but by means of Zodiacs, we explored a great deal of it. We also got to see lots of species interacting in small areas, and it was quite refreshing to see how two (sometimes three) totally different organisms, would survive and live in peace and harmony.
